Andrew Gordon is a tax attorney and Certified Public Accountant. He founded Gordon Law Group in 2012 after clerking at the IRS Office of Chief Counsel during law school, volunteering at the school’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, and working in tax at a Big Four accounting firm, with a simple idea: the strategies large firms use to resolve tax problems should be available to people who cannot afford large firms. Gordon Tax, LLC grew out of the same idea applied to the return itself: prepared by people who know what the IRS looks for.
In 2014 an Ethereum developer asked Andrew for help with cryptocurrency taxes at a time when almost no tax professional would touch the subject. That matter became the start of a crypto tax practice that now makes up the majority of the firms’ work, with more than 1,500 crypto tax reports prepared through every market cycle since. He has testified before the IRS and Treasury on the digital asset broker reporting rules that became Form 1099-DA, and his commentary on crypto tax has appeared on CNBC, Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, NerdWallet, USA Today, and The Washington Post.
Holding both a law license and a CPA shapes how he works a matter: the numbers and the legal strategy come from the same desk. At Gordon Tax that means the return is prepared with the audit in mind; at Gordon Law Group it means the audit is defended by someone who understands how the return was built.
He teaches as an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law in the Emerging Technologies program, serves as a director of Digital Asset Tax Action, and is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. He writes about crypto tax policy and his work in Washington on his Substack.
