James Cortez is the Manager of Private Client Services in the Cryptocurrency Department at Gordon Tax. He joined the firm in 2016 as an administrative assistant and grew into the most senior member of the crypto tax team after founder Andrew Gordon, preparing hundreds of cryptocurrency tax returns and reconciling millions of blockchain transactions along the way.
James keeps his own trading records, which is how he first understood why investors needed accountants who actually understood the technology. He now works with clients who have the most complicated cryptocurrency, NFT, and DeFi activity, and he leads the reconciliation work behind multi-year catch-ups and 1099-DA corrections.
He studied at Harper College and Western Illinois University, earning a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science with a minor in business management.
