What is Chicago personal property lease transaction tax?

Why it matters on your return

Businesses in Chicago pay it on SaaS subscriptions and cloud computing they may not think of as leases. Vendors often collect it, but the business owes it directly when they do not.

Example

A Chicago agency pays $2,000 a month for cloud software. At 15 percent the lease tax is $300 a month, or $3,600 a year, whether the vendor bills it or the agency self-assesses.

Does the Chicago lease tax apply to businesses outside the city?

It applies where the leased property or service is used in Chicago. A Skokie business using software only in Skokie is outside it.
