What is Crypto ATM purchases and sales?

Buying crypto with cash, or selling crypto for cash, at a kiosk.

Why it matters on your return

Purchases set basis at the price paid including the kiosk fee, which is often 10 to 20 percent. Sales are disposals at the amount received. Kiosk receipts are usually the only record, and many ATM operators now report to the IRS as brokers. Basis documentation is the main risk: a purchase with no receipt is a purchase with no provable basis.

Example

You buy $1,000 of Bitcoin at an ATM with a 15 percent fee and receive $850 worth of BTC. Your basis is $1,000 (price paid including fee). Selling it later for $1,100 is a $100 gain, not $250.

Do crypto ATMs report to the IRS?

Many operators are brokers and issue Form 1099-DA on sales. Keep every receipt; it is your basis record.
