Decentralized exchange (DEX)

A platform where users trade crypto through blockchain protocols, generally without depositing assets with a centralized exchange operator.

What is Decentralized exchange?

A platform where users trade crypto through blockchain protocols, generally without depositing assets with a centralized exchange operator.

Why it matters on your return

Trades on a DEX are taxable exactly like trades on Coinbase, and nobody reports them. The 2024 rule that would have made DEX front ends brokers was repealed in 2025, so the reporting burden is entirely yours, and the IRS can still trace the activity on-chain.

Example

You make 400 swaps on Uniswap during the year from a self-custody wallet. No form arrives. All 400 are disposals reported on Form 8949 from your own reconciliation.

Does the IRS know about my DEX trades?

Not from a broker report, but the transactions are public on the blockchain and the exchange that received your withdrawal has your identity. Unreported DEX activity is discoverable.
