Effective tax rate

Total tax divided by total income: the average rate you actually paid, as opposed to the marginal rate on your last dollar.

What is Effective tax rate?

Total tax divided by total income: the average rate you actually paid, as opposed to the marginal rate on your last dollar.

Why it matters on your return

People plan around the marginal rate and are surprised by the effective rate. A 35 percent marginal bracket often produces a 22 to 26 percent effective rate once lower brackets and deductions are counted.

Example

Taxable income of $300,000 produces roughly $74,000 of federal tax for a single filer under the 2026 brackets, an effective rate near 25 percent, even though the top dollars are taxed at 35 percent.

Which rate matters for decisions?

The marginal rate. Every additional dollar of income or deduction is taxed or saved at the margin, not at the average.
