Exchange account statements vs transaction exports

The difference between a periodic summary an exchange sends you and the full transaction-level CSV export of every trade, transfer, fee, and reward.

What is Exchange account statements vs transaction exports?

The difference between a periodic summary an exchange sends you and the full transaction-level CSV export of every trade, transfer, fee, and reward.

Why it matters on your return

A statement shows balances; a return needs transactions. Reconciliation requires the complete export from every platform for every year, including platforms you no longer use, plus wallet addresses for self-custody. The 1099-DA is a third document that covers sales only. All three have to agree.

Example

You send your preparer a year-end statement showing you hold 3 ETH. It says nothing about the 40 trades that got you there. The transaction export does, and that is what the return is built from.

What do I need to send my crypto tax preparer?

Full transaction exports from every exchange and platform for every year, every wallet address you control, every 1099-DA and 1099-MISC, and records of anything off-platform (P2P, ATM, gifts).
