What is Form 1099-K?

Reports payments received through third-party networks and marketplaces above a threshold. Gross, not net; you still deduct costs on the return.

Why it matters on your return

A 1099-K reports gross payments, including refunds, fees, and personal reimbursements, so it routinely overstates income. Your return should reconcile to it and show the offsets. The reporting threshold has moved several times; check the current one.

Example

A marketplace 1099-K shows $48,000 of payments. Your records show $6,000 of refunds and $9,000 of fees. You report $48,000 of gross receipts and deduct the offsets so net income is $33,000.

I got a 1099-K for splitting rent with roommates. Is that income?

No, but it needs to be addressed on the return so the IRS matching does not treat it as unreported income.
