What is Form 1099-MISC for crypto?

The form US exchanges issue for $600 or more of crypto income such as staking rewards, earn program yield, and referral bonuses.

Why it matters on your return

The 1099-MISC covers income, not sales; the 1099-DA covers sales, not income. An active investor may receive both from the same exchange. The MISC amount is the exchange's valuation of your rewards, which should match your own records within rounding; large differences usually mean a valuation-timing gap.

Example

Coinbase issues a 1099-MISC showing $1,850 of staking rewards. You report $1,850 on Schedule 1 and use the exchange's per-reward values as basis for those lots.

Do I owe tax on 1099-MISC crypto income if I never sold the coins?

Yes. The rewards are income at receipt. Selling the coins later is a separate event.
