Form 3115

The application for a change in accounting method, used to switch between cash and accrual, correct depreciation errors, or change inventory methods.

What is Form 3115?

The application for a change in accounting method, used to switch between cash and accrual, correct depreciation errors, or change inventory methods.

Why it matters on your return

Many changes are automatic and simply attached to the return, and they let you fix past depreciation mistakes in one year through a catch-up adjustment instead of amending prior returns.

Example

A landlord discovers three years of missed depreciation on a rental. Form 3115 with an automatic change takes the full missed amount as a deduction this year.

Does Form 3115 trigger an audit?

Automatic changes are routine and do not by themselves increase examination risk.
