Form 8949 adjustment codes for crypto

The letter codes in column (f) of Form 8949 that explain why your reported basis or gain differs from what a broker reported.

What is Form 8949 adjustment codes for crypto?

The letter codes in column (f) of Form 8949 that explain why your reported basis or gain differs from what a broker reported.

Why it matters on your return

Three codes do most of the crypto work. Code B: the broker's basis is wrong or missing and you are correcting it. Code T: the broker's holding period is wrong. Code W: a wash sale (applies to crypto ETFs, not directly held coins). Using the codes tells the IRS matching system that a difference is deliberate and documented rather than an omission.

Example

Your 1099-DA reports a sale with $0 basis. On Form 8949 you enter the proceeds as reported, your actual $40,000 basis, code B in column (f), and the $40,000 adjustment in column (g).

Which Form 8949 code do I use when my 1099-DA has no cost basis?

Code B, with the correct basis in column (e) and the adjustment amount in column (g). Keep the records that support the basis.
