Liquid staking token (LST)

A transferable token representing a position in staked assets and associated staking economics, such as stETH or rETH.

What is Liquid staking token?

A transferable token representing a position in staked assets and associated staking economics, such as stETH or rETH.

Why it matters on your return

Selling, swapping, or using an LST as collateral follows the same rules as any token: a disposal at fair market value. The complication is basis: under the transfer position it is your original ETH basis; under the exchange position it is the value when you received the LST.

Example

You swap 5 stETH for 5.1 ETH after a year. Under the transfer position, your basis is the original ETH cost and the holding period carries; under the exchange position, basis is the value at receipt.

Do liquid staking tokens generate a 1099-DA?

Only if sold through a broker. Receiving them from the protocol and holding them produces no form.
