What is Schedule E?

The schedule for rental real estate, royalties, and income from partnerships, S corporations, and trusts reported on K-1s.

Why it matters on your return

Rentals report here with depreciation and expenses; pass-through income lands here from K-1s. Passive loss rules and basis limits are applied on the way in.

Example

A landlord with two rentals reports $28,000 of rent, $22,000 of expenses, and $9,000 of depreciation, for a $3,000 loss that may or may not be deductible depending on income.

Is Airbnb income Schedule E or Schedule C?

Schedule E if you provide only basic services. Substantial services like meals or daily cleaning push it to Schedule C and self-employment tax.
