What is Self-employment tax?

Why it matters on your return

Self-employment tax is the Social Security and Medicare tax an employee and employer would split, paid entirely by the self-employed person on net profit. It applies whether or not you owe any income tax, and it is the tax an S corporation election is designed to reduce.

Example

A sole proprietor with $80,000 of net profit owes roughly $11,300 of self-employment tax on top of income tax. Half of it is deductible against income tax, which softens but does not remove it.

Does crypto trading create self-employment tax?

Not for investors. Trading gains are capital gains. Mining or staking run as a business, or fees earned for services paid in crypto, can be subject to it.
