What is Form 8949?

The schedule listing every sale of capital assets with date acquired, date sold, proceeds, basis, and adjustments. Crypto disposals are reported here, then totaled on Schedule D.

Why it matters on your return

Every crypto disposal belongs on Form 8949, split into short-term and long-term and into transactions reported on a broker form and those not. Adjustment codes in column (f) are how you correct wrong basis on a 1099-DA or 1099-B. Totals then flow to Schedule D.

Example

A trader with 4,000 transactions attaches a Form 8949 summary with a statement listing every lot, rather than typing each line. The statement is part of the return and must match the totals.

Can I just report totals instead of every transaction?

You can report totals on Form 8949 if you attach a statement with the transaction detail. Software exports usually serve as that statement.
