What is Extension?

An automatic six-month extension of the filing deadline, requested on Form 4868 for individuals. It extends the time to file, not the time to pay.

Why it matters on your return

An extension moves the filing deadline to October 15 but not the payment deadline. Tax owed after April 15 accrues interest and a failure-to-pay penalty even with a valid extension. Extending is routine for clients with K-1s or complex crypto years; extending without paying is the mistake.

Example

You file Form 4868 on April 10 with a $5,000 payment based on a projection. In October the return shows $6,000 owed. You pay the $1,000 difference plus modest interest, and no failure-to-file penalty applies.

Does an extension increase my audit risk?

No. Extensions are automatic and are not a selection factor.
