What is Amended return?

A corrected return filed after the original, on Form 1040-X for individuals. Used to fix errors, claim a missed credit, or report income left off the original.

Why it matters on your return

An amended return replaces what the IRS has on file for that year. It is how you claim a refund you missed, correct a basis error on a crypto sale, or report income that was left off before the IRS notices the mismatch. Amending to add income is generally treated more favorably than waiting for a notice.

Example

You filed with a broker 1099-B that showed zero cost basis on RSU shares you sold, and paid tax on the full proceeds. An amended return with the correct basis produces a refund of the tax on wages that were already taxed at vesting.

How long does an amended return take to process?

The IRS quotes up to 16 weeks and often takes longer. Refunds from amended returns are not fast; file as soon as the error is found.
