What is Transcript?

The IRS record of what has been reported about you: wages, 1099s, and account activity. Used to reconstruct records when preparing missed years.

Why it matters on your return

The wage and income transcript lists every W-2, 1099, and broker form the IRS received about you for a year. It is the starting point for any missed-year return because it shows what the IRS already expects to see, and it reveals substitute returns the IRS may have filed for you.

Example

Preparing three unfiled years, we pull transcripts and find a 1099-B for a brokerage account you had forgotten. Reporting it up front avoids a matching notice after filing.

How do I get my transcript?

Through your IRS online account, by mail, or through us with a signed authorization form, which lets us retrieve all years at once.

Last reviewed September 10, 2026. Tax rules change; confirm current law before acting.
