What is Substitute for return?

A return the IRS prepares for you when you do not file, using the income it has on record and no deductions, credits, or basis.

Why it matters on your return

A substitute return produces the largest possible bill. Filing your own accurate return for that year generally replaces the assessment, which is why catching up almost always reduces what the IRS says you owe.

Example

The IRS files a substitute return for a year with $90,000 of 1099-B proceeds and assesses tax on all of it. Your actual return shows $85,000 of basis and a $5,000 gain; the assessment drops accordingly.

Can I still file if the IRS already filed for me?

Yes. Your return is processed as a reconsideration and normally replaces the substitute return's numbers.
