Transaction hash (TXID)

A unique identifier used to locate a blockchain transaction and inspect its status, asset movements, and fees.

What is Transaction hash?

A unique identifier used to locate a blockchain transaction and inspect its status, asset movements, and fees.

Why it matters on your return

The transaction hash is the primary source document for any on-chain activity: it proves the date, the assets moved, the counterparties, and the fee. When an exchange has closed or a wallet export is incomplete, hashes are how basis and transfers are reconstructed.

Example

Your crypto tax software shows a mystery deposit of 2 ETH. The transaction hash on a block explorer shows it came from your own hardware wallet address, which turns a phantom purchase into a transfer with carried-over basis.

Should I keep transaction hashes for my tax records?

Yes. They are the strongest evidence of what happened and when, and they never disappear when a platform does.
